Craters of the Moon

Well we loaded up the kids yesterday and headed towards Craters of the Moon National Park near Arco, Idaho! It was a pleasant drive and nice to see some new scenery! And the kids kept the fighting to a minimum which is always a plus! Coleman was an angel and didn't cry once in the car! (woohoo!)
I didn't know if Craters of the Moon would be all that great especially after entering the dinky visitors center. But soon I heard an excited voice from behind a partition--"Lava! Look at the Lava!!!" Liston and Deacon were watching an old documentery on the volcanoes that erupted forming the park and they thought it was the neatest thing ever!!! I just had to sit there and smile! We watched the movie twice and would have watched it again had we not convinced the boys that we'd better get going see the actual park.
Craters was actually pretty neat! We hiked up this cool dome covered with all kinds of lava gravel! Todd dropped a big rock on the ground and it made a huge hollow thud--sounded really cool. The top had a great view of the area and an awesome lone Juniper tree. So we stopped for a few photos!

Then we made our way to the caves--they were SOOO cool!! The first one was Dewdrop cave. It was tiny but really neat in there. Coleman and I stayed at the top :)
Then the next cave was Indian caves and you enter the cave and walk through and exit at the different spot and follow that carins back to the trail. The cave was still filled with snow and a little slick in spots. Deacon of course fell down a few times but got just a few scratches. It was a fun day, made even funner by 3 excited boys!!!

Looks like alot of fun...how far a drive was it? Lava and caves are definitely made for boys! Cute shots; glad to see Maralee in the pictures.

Wow those are incredible pictures. That old tree is a photo opt if I've ever seen one! My dad lives in Arco... he convinced me it wasn't very pretty, but it seems to me even if the town isn't anything great there are some stunning places near by. So happy you were all able to enjoy it!
